Robert Pattinson looks perfect as Edward Cullen in this promotional photo, currently circulating online along with several others, for the upcoming The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.Pattinson’s/Edward’s makeup isn’t overdone, the hair isn’t overdone, the lipstick isn’t overdone, the clothes aren’t overdone. Edward looks like he could pass for human if humans were ungodly beautiful. And that’s pretty much the way his character is described in Stephenie Meyer’s novels.
Meyer herself initially wanted Henry Cavill (Charles Brandon in The Tudors) for the role of Edward, but by the time Twilight was optioned by Summit in 2007, Cavill was already 24 and too old the pass for the 17-year-old vampire.
After Pattinson was cast in the role, angry Twilight fans wanted "anyone else" but him. Some found him too ugly (or not good-looking enough) for the role; others just found him inadequate.
"The books have a huge following," Pattinson told the London Evening Standard around that time, "and I’ve already got bags of letters from angry fans, telling me that I can’t possibly play Edward, because I’m Diggory. I hope I can prove them wrong."
Seems like he has.
