Is Robert Pattinson derailing Zac Efron's career?

Photobucket

With Zac Efron's latest film, the romance 'Charlie St. Cloud,' now an official box office disaster, everyone is asking what happened to the 'High School Musical' golden goose. The answer, two words: Robert Pattinson.

"Robert is the new King of all the screaming girls at this moment and they have forgotten Zac. You only need to look at this years MTV Movie Awards, when Zac entered the girls were excited but when Robert walked in the place went nuts," relationship expert Matt Titus tells me. "Twilight has changed everything and Robert Pattison gets it. He says nothing, and acts mysteriously. This is what teenage girls really want right now." (Kat: Teenage girls? Why do they always focus on the teenage girls?)

However, it seems that Zac has received that memo too. Switching from his more playful roles to ones that focus on his character rather than his pretty-boy looks have come at a huge box office cost.

"Hollywood only cares about making money," one producer tells me. "We honestly don't care if Zac is singing 'Hello Dolly' or playing a vampire, as long as he sells tickets. That fact that 'Charlie St. Cloud' dropped a whopping 60% in its second week following a very mediocre opening tells me Zac should speak less, smile more and take off as much clothing as possible. Or else he will end up like countless other pinup popcorn actors and actresses that decided that they all of a sudden wanted to be taken seriously when all their fans."

According to Box Office Mojo, 'Charlie' has raked in a mere $23 million since opening July 30. It's budget: $44 mil.

Joe Neumaier, film critic for the New York Daily News, thinks Patz isn't Zac's biggest problem, telling me, "I blame an overcrowded pin-up boy field. Yes, Rob Pattinson is in that jam-packed yearbook but so is Taylor Lautner, some 'Gossip Girl' boys, Shia LaBeouf, the 'Glee' guys and at least one Jonas brother. All these young dudes are now starting to cancel each other out. I think at this point, there's only so many dewy-eyed sulking guys girls can keep track of." (Kat: They'll never cancel you out Rob... never!)

PopEater's own Celebenomics columnist, Jo Piazza, agrees. "Efron is in an oversaturated market for adorably coiffed young gentlemen of a certain age with nothing to differentiate him. He isn't as edgy as Robert Pattinson, as heartthrobby as Chace Crawford or as cutesy as Bieber. (Kat: Did this lady just put Rob in the same category as Bieber? Really?) His claim to fame, 'High School Musical' was too quickly eclipsed by 'Glee.' There is no demand out there right now for a product that is specifically Efron."

So is Zac career really over at a tender 22-years of age? Please say this isn't true!!!

"I don't think Zac Efron has a career problem. I just think that he made a movie that didn't connect with an audience. This film didn't have mass appeal and was a departure from Efron's normal roles. His audience didn't follow. He needs to choose his next role wisely, but he absolutely still has a career," Tina Wells, Author of tween book series Mackenzie Blue & CEO, Buzz Marketing Group told me.

So, let's hope Zac is listening because it sounds like it's time to dust of those tap shoes, break out the Jazz hands and start warming up those vocal chords. Stop trying to be Robert Pattinson and start being yourself again.

"Zac needs to stick with his strengths," Paul Dergarabedian, President of Box-office Division of Hollywood.com says. "Singing, dancing and comedy." And leave the depressing stuff to Mr. Pattinson. (Kat: Because he broods really well... at least I like it!)

Teen Choice Awards 2010: Red Carpet Recap

Matt Lanter talks Robert Pattinson

I'm actually quite looking forward to seeing Vampire's Suck... as long they didn't show all the good bits in the trailer.

Matt Lanter who plays "Edward" in the movie spoke to E! Online and People at the Teen Choice Awards.

It's a lot of pressure to walk in Robert Pattinson's footsteps as vampire heartthrob Edward Cullen, but somebody's got to do it.

Matt Lanter, the hunky actor who plays 90210's Liam Court, has stepped up to the plate to play Edward in the Twilight saga spoof, Vampires Suck.

But judging from Lanter's words, it sounds like the spoofed version will be a bit more racy than the original flicks. "I'm naked in the movie," the actor, 27, told PEOPLE at the Teen Choice Awards in L.A. on Sunday.

"We very closely follow the Twilight saga, so I think anything you might find cheesy about Twilight – which I know sounds really weird – we tackle that," Lanter says. "You know that famous 'I'm a killer' scene where [Pattinson] is talking about how he's a vampire? We make fun of that, but I pull out a gun and shoot. I'm actually a killer."

And even though Lanter says he hasn't discussed the spoof with Pattinson, he thinks the British superstar and his fans will give the film two thumbs up.

"It seems like [Pattinson]'s got a sense of humor," Lanter said. "We're adding to the Twilight saga in a fun, quirky way … We're paying homage. It's the greatest form of flattery."

It didn't suck to be a vampire at the Teen Choice Awards, but Vampires Suck star Matt Lanter was walking the carpet with one eye open.

The 90210 cutie who plays "Edward" in the Scary Movie-type spoof braved the awards on Sunday despite the fact there were many Twilight stars roaming around.

"I really hope I don't see Robert [Pattinson]," Matt joked to us on the carpet. But that wasn't what really made him nervous...

"I'm just kidding, Rob seems like a cool guy, I'm sure he'll laugh about [the film]. I've heard he has a sense of humor about it all."

So if it's not R.Pattz's hair that had Lanter a bit rattled, what was it?

"It was the Twilight fans, the Twi-hards, who I was really worried about," Matt said, with a smile that rivals Taylor Lautner's pearly whites, might we add. "But they seem to like it actually. I think the Twilight fans have a sense of humor, so it's making it that much more fun."

Lanter said they steered clear of Bon Temps where True Blood's bad-ass vamps reside and poked fun mainly at Stephenie Meyer's creation.

Twilight Star Gives Opinion On Breaking Dawn Birth Scene

There is much debate over the graphic birthing scene in the Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn. Should it be shown in all its gory, we mean glory or should it be toned down for a younger audience?

Several of the film's cast members have put their two cents in and now Charlie Bewley who plays Volturi vampire, Demetri in the franchise thinks the more blood the better!

According to OK! USA, Charlie said: "I think they should just go all the way and do it in 3D!

"The baby kind of pops out and floats above the audience's head. Everyone who goes to see the movie with a bunch of kids going, 'what?!'”

He added: "There will be blood going like this [tilts head back, opens mouth and slides fingers over his face]."

Eek! We're not particularly squeamish but that might be taking things a bit too far Charlie!

EW Grades Robert Pattinson’s “Teen Choice Awards” Look

ROBERT PATTINSON

Yes, we are aware that legions of Twilight fans will scream in unison no matter what R.Patz says, does, or wears. But couldn’t the man who plays Edward Cullen have hired a stylist — or even a dry-cleaner — to steam those troublesome wrinkles from his too-too-casual blue plaid shirt? Grade: D+

The Medallion lives on!! Robert Pattinson brings a little WFE to the Teen Choice Awards?

Robert Pattinson appears to have held on to a small part of his Water for Elephants costume! We don’t blame him, souvenirs are so very special and he seems to have chosen a great one. The jury is still out…. Do you think Rob is wearing the Robowski Medallion?? This was our first glimpse…

And then… more chain. It looked familiar… to a kinker. So we tweeted out “Could this be the Robowski medallion?”

A very sweet extra from Water for Elephants, Emily, was on stage during the awards, escorting winners and nominees to and from the stage. She helped organize the whole Twilight cast, ensuring they were together for a key announcement. Emily was up close with Rob and tweeted,

@H2OforElephants he is wearing the same necklace he wore on set. I noticed that too when I saw him!

Here’s the same chain on Rob’s stunt double, Paul McDonald…

Which matches this chain…

And the clearest shot we have so far from set…

St Francis is, among many other things, the patron saint of peace, ecology, animals, and family.

INTERVIEW: WFE extra chats about giving Rob & Christoph a chuckle

Steelesque Movement: Ok last question Lisa…what has been your most memorable moment in LA? I’m sure you pretty awestruck when you went to lunch with Clayton.

Lisa Marie Summerscales: the lunch was great….I got the opportunity to make Christoph Waltz and Robert Pattinson laugh before they were about to engage in a fight scene. When I was on the set for Water For Elephants I was pretty much awestruck being in the same room as Christoph Waltz and Reese Witherspoon two Academy Award winners and actors I respect and what girl wouldn’t want to be in the same room as Robert Pattinson. So we had a moment where I introduced myself to the assistant director who continued to put me in front of the camera which lined me up to be right next to Robert Pattinson and Christoph Waltz and Christoph looks at me…it’s a fight scene and he says, “miss I’m so sorry for the despicable array of violence your about to see” as he was about to beat up Robert Pattinson and I said, “Christoph just do what you have to do” and Robert was so taken aback that someone would say something like that to him that they both start laughing.

Steelesque Movement: So you might have some sort of influence on the scene…

Lisa Marie Summerscales: it was great just getting to speak with them and be in the same room with them. The most incredible part is watching them all work together and being in the background I’ve been able to make all kinds of connections with people and with like 200 people running around I think I still stood out which is cool.

I only included the part about ‘Water For Elephants’ but click the source link to read the whole interview.
