Team Edward vs. Team Jacob: The Indiana Gazette Discusses the Characters’ Appeal

COPIED AND PASTE

Athens vs. Sparta. Red Sox vs. Yankees. Jennifer Aniston vs. Angelina Jolie.

Since the dawn of time, fierce rivalries have inspired fierce devotion, and Edward vs. Jacob in the “Twilight” saga is the latest, most fervent example.

Although fans of Stephenie Meyer’s staggeringly popular series of novels know how it all ends – whether tormented teenager Bella ends up with vampire Edward or werewolf Jacob – somehow they still root as hard as ever for their favorite.
That obviously remains true as the hotly anticipated third film based on the books, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” arrives in theaters June 30. And most align themselves firmly one way or the other: There is no gray area here.

*
But what does it say about people if they wear a T-shirt emblazoned with “Team Edward” or “Team Jacob” underneath their Forks High School hoodies?

Jeremy Clyman, who writes about film in his “Reel Therapy” blog on the Psychology Today website, says just wanting to belong to a group is a fundamental human desire. Which side you choose in “Twilight,” though, could stem from personal factors beyond merely thinking Robert Pattinson as Edward is cuter than Taylor Lautner as Jacob – or vice versa.

The Rise of Robert Pattinson: from Model to Vampire and Beyond

COPIED AND PASTE

Pattinson, who is from Barnes in west London, started his career as a model aged 12 but struggled to find work by the time he was 16. He has described himself as having “the most unsuccessful modelling career”.

In May 2005 Pattinson was set to appear in the UK premiere of The Woman Before at the Royal Court Theatre but was fired shortly before opening night and was replaced by Tom Riley.

However, also in 2005 came Pattinson’s big break when he was cast as Cedric Diggory – a Hogwarts prefect – in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
The first installment of Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series was released in November 2008 in America. It launched Pattinson as a Hollywood heart throb. He was named Sexiest Man Alive by People magazine in 2008 and 2009.

Movie Critics Give “Eclipse” Rave Reviews

COPIED AND PASTE

More articulate, more plot-driven than the previous segments, “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse,” the third film of Stephenie Meyer’s successful book series, is artistically the most interesting and engaging chapter thus far.

However, it also proves that the particular story and the dilemmas faced by the central characters are far more important than the specific director assigned to the project, though helmer David Slade should get some credit for the higher level of acting and better production values.
Relying on more action and events, and less mood and attitude, “Eclipse” is a revenge-driven romantic movie, which should please the fans of the books as well as the supporters of the first two movie chapters. Regardless of what kind of reviews it gets, the third installment should score big (perhaps the biggest) for its distributor, Summit Entertainment, which will open the picture on June 30, in the midst of the summer season. (The previous installments were released on Thanksgiving weekend, see below).

In less than five years, Phoenix housewife-writer Stephenie Meyer has become a worldwide publishing phenomenon. The translation rights for her four “Twilight” novels have been sold in nearly 50 countries and 100 million copies have been sold worldwide. Her books have been on the bestseller list for over 142 weeks.

Two notches above the previous chapter, “New Moon,” which suffered from an indulgent, overly long narrative and a pretentiously gloomy mood, “Eclipse” is functionally directed by David Slade, who had previously made “30 Days of Night” and “Hard Candy.” Smartly, Slade pays greater attention than his two predecessors to storytelling and characterization, and as a result, his youthful cast, headed by Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, comes across as more appealing than before.

Though giving this saga a different visual style from that of his predecessors (the first by Catherine Hardwick and the second by Chris Weitz), Slade shows than an intelligent director can shape the literary material into an engaging picture, given the broad base of the book series, and the sepcific dramatic elements at this phase of sprawling narrative.

GQ Discusses Robert Pattinson’s “Deathless Appeal”

COPIED AND PASTE

Every teen idol has a calling card – a look, a sound, a phrase so potent that merely the anticipation of it will transport his legion of admirers into that most moist territory located somewhere between incipient madness and uncontrollable lust. Elvis Presley sent his quiff west while his hips pointed east; Brando had his biker’s cap at just such a tilt; while the Beatles boasted the opening Fadd9 chord of “A Hard Day’s Night”. Robert Pattinson – and if you don’t think he belongs in the above company, then you clearly didn’t get out much in 2009 – well, Robert Pattinson looks like death warmed up.
Pattinson, for the uninitiated, entered this pantheon of poster boys with his pasty-faced depiction of the vampire, Edward Cullen, in Twilight. Thanks largely to RP’s dark-eyed charm, Twilight’s Catherine Hardwicke became the most commercially successful female director ever. Meanwhile, author Stephenie Meyer, from whose book the film was adapted, bestrides the bestseller lists, a storming Mormon and latter-day JK. The third instalment of the series, Eclipse, hits cinemas in July.

As Cullen, Pattinson is the latest incarnation of the doomy, Gothic leading man who’s been getting ladies in a lather since the Brontës first sharpened a quill. What’s new here, however, is that the Pattinson phenomenon has been propelled by an unstoppable trinity of Twitter, Facebook and Bebo. Combining an ancient archetype with a modern medium, Pattinson has become a conduit for the traditional sublimated rage, lust, frustration and fantasy of a billion bedroom-bound teenage girls (aka the Twihards). He is the first genuine http://www.heart-throb/.

Remember Me Director Says Robert Pattinson was “Scruffy, Intense, Charming and Unpretentious.”

There is an elephant in the room, metaphorically. He is a most handsome, most famous, most perplexing elephant. His name is Robert Pattinson, a superstar among Twi-hards who follow his every breathless, bloodless moment in the Twilight series.

But “the room” is an American indie film called Remember Me, beautifully crafted with an air of thoughtful melancholy by director Allen Coulter. This is the story of a New York university student estranged from his wealthy father, in trouble with cops, and intrigued by the daughter of one detective who has already smashed his face in during an alley fight. The film just debuted on DVD following its modest theatrical run, timed to coincide with Friday’s release of The Twilight Saga: Eclipse.

The Province: Robert Pattinson Reflects on What Might Come After the Twilight Explosion

CAN HE JUST BE MORE FUCKING HOT?

COPIED AND PASTE

Robert Pattinson just might be at the pinnacle of his career but he’s not going to fret about it.
Pattinson plays vampire Edward Cullen opposite Kristen Stewart’s Bella Swan in the Twilight movie series, which continues its high-profile run with The Twilight Saga: Eclipse which opens to a great deal of anticipation Wednesday.
Based on the best-selling Stephenie Meyer books, the first two film versions, Twilight and New Moon, earned a whopping $1.1 billion worldwide, underscoring the acclaim afforded to Stewart and Pattinson.

The final chapter, Breaking Dawn, starts shooting in October, a six-month production of two separate movies with Breaking Dawn Part I already set to open Nov. 18, 2011.

That means the reluctant poster boy heartthrob has a few more years to endure Twi-hard frenzy from fans who are tween, teen and way past post-college.

Not surprisingly, Pattinson has evolved since Twilight first hit screens in 2008, followed by New Moon last year.

So, yes, Eclipse was another learning experience for the actor, but for a slightly different reason as the love triangle between Bella, Edward and Jacob (Taylor Lautner) heats up. That’s just as the avenging vampire Victoria (Bryce Dallas Howard replaces Montreal’s Rachelle Lefevre) returns with a gang of fiendish “new blood” vampires determined to eliminate Bella, Edward, and the Cullen coven.

During a chat at a Beverly Hills Hotel, the affable 24-year-old Pattinson shares his thoughts on Eclipse, the Twilight series and himself in this brief portrait of an artist as a famous young man.

- First of all, he agrees that getting into the moody Edward persona always arrives with the costuming, especially the insert of those vivid vampire contact lenses.

“I think probably the contact lenses make me miserable as soon as I put them in,” Pattinson says. “That’s what creates the sort of brooding, pouting character.”

- Eclipse called for some other preparations, however.

LOS ANGELES – From Winnipeg, Canada to Erie, Pennsylvania, from 13-year-olds to 53-year-olds, hundreds of “Twilight” fans camped out at the Nokia Plaza where the “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse” recently premiered just to get a glimpse, an autograph or a photo of their favorite “Twilight” stars in a coveted spot on the red carpet.

The third installment of the popular franchise, which stars Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner, was screened as part of the Los Angeles Film Festival at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live.
Around 500 fans, who set up tents and waited for more than 90 hours just to see their vampire stars, even brought their favorite “Twilight” paraphernalia with them – blankets, towels, photos, posters, t-shirts, fans, among others.

We interviewed the “Twilight” stars at the Four Seasons Hotel in Los Angeles and got a glimpse of how the stars of the blockbuster series have grown and matured.

Donning a shorter cropped hairstyle, Robert, who portrays Edward Cullen in the David Slade-helmed movie, revealed that the easiest scene for him was when his character proposed to Bella Swan (Kristen) in the meadow.

He said, “Probably the easiest scene to do was when Kristen and I were in the meadow and I was asking her to marry me and stuff.”
As for the most difficult one, Robert admitted, “It had to be the tent scene where the three of us were inside the tent. I was so tired already when we were shooting that scene and I kept forgetting my lines. I was just absolutely exhausted when I did it. I could not remember my lines and I was just all over the place that day. I was getting so stressed out all the time. After about five takes, Kristen, who was supposed to be asleep on the floor, sort of looked up and tried to make me laugh the entire time. So the entire scene, I was trying to stop myself from laughing.”

Asked what he looks for in a wife or a girlfriend, Robert disclosed, “I haven’t really thought about it but she has to like dogs (laughs). I also do not like people who shout a lot (laughs). That drives me crazy.

Yeah must like dogs and no shouters. That’s about it! (laughs)”

The Fans Have Spoken: “Eclipse” is “Way Better than New Moon”

COPIED AND PASTE

After turning the space outside the Nokia Theatre into a tent city earlier this week, hundreds of screaming “Twilight” fans — many toting posters with messages such as “I want to play ‘Pat the Pattinson’ ” or “My heart goes nutz for Lutz” scrawled in brilliant colors — got their wish at the world premiere Thursday of “The Twilight Saga: Eclipse”: photos with Robert Pattinson, a glimpse at Kellan Lutz’s Calvin Klein underwear and, for a few, last-minute tickets to see the film.

“It’s still such a struggle in the car on the way here,” Pattinson said on the red carpet. “I’m like, ‘I can’t breathe. I can’t breathe.’ “
It was a sentiment the nearby shrieking girls at the premiere definitely shared, which was part of the Los Angeles Film Festival, even though other festival-goers might not have. After all, the movie isn’t exactly the kind of fare typical of the films screened at the festival, which is sponsored by the Los Angeles Times. And though the screening of the Summit Entertainment film brought in scores of celebrities and media attention, it also ran the risk of alienating the festival’s core clientele of indie-film fans.

The “Twilight” franchise is growing up.

In the series’ third installment, “Eclipse,” a dark tone pervades and limbs fly from bodies in a climactic battle involving vampires and werewolves. And the love triangle between lead characters Edward, Bella and Jacob burns with even greater intensity.

“In terms of the violence and stuff, I guess that makes it a little bit more grown-up,” said Robert Pattinson, who plays the smoldering vamp Edward. “And also I think it’s just a more accessible storyline. The sort of love triangle thing — being torn between two lovers doesn’t really happen when you’re 8. So yeah, I guess it’s a bit more grown-up in that respect.”

Kristen Stewart, whose character Bella must choose between the two magical beings, compares the emotional trauma of making that choice to the violence of battle.

On a dark, rainy night outside of Seattle, Bella Swan is at a life crossroads. With an army of vampires out for blood (hers), she must hide out in the woods between two supernatural hotties.

Vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) wants to protect his freezing mortal girlfriend from frostbite but must defer to his arch enemy, werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).
“After all, I’m hotter than you,” Jacob says and then wraps around Bella in what could only be described as werewolf spooning.

For those keeping score between Team Jacob and Team Edward, it’s a laugh-out-loud moment in the new film “Eclipse,” opening Friday.

Ask Pattinson on a sunny spring morning in Beverly Hills his rebuttal to the “I’m hotter” line and he drops the trademark sullen puss and actually smiles.

“What is my comeback? There is actually nothing you can say,” says Pattinson, who arrives with shorn locks.

EW Interviews Robert Pattinson, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner

The stars of the scortching-hot franchise gather to dish about the new Twilight movie, Oprah, their diverging careers, and (yes) their intense feelings for each other.

by Nicole Sperling
Kristen Stewart comes bearing a gift. The actress — who’s gangly, strikingly beautiful, and still only 20 despite having made movies for nearly a decade — has baked her interviewer a little loquat pie, which she carries in a mini-aluminum tin, like one you’d find in a child’s Easy-Bake oven set. Stewart and costars Taylor Lautner, 18, and Robert Pattinson, 24, have gathered to talk about Eclipse, which opens June 30 and is, of course, the third installment in the phenomenally successful Twilight saga. The movie, rated PG-13 and directed by David Slade, finds Jacob (Lautner) and his werewolf pals joining forces with Edward (Pattinson) and his vampire clan to defend Bella (Stewart) against an army of new vampires. At the moment, however, no one wants to talk about the movie — the darkest and most compelling of the franchise so far. They just want to try the pie, which features fruit from Stewart’s own backyard. “It’s not warm and there’s no ice cream, and those are really the two things that would make it exceptional,” she says. “But it will be fine.”

When Twilight hit theaters a year and a half ago, Stewart never would have baked something for a reporter. Back then, she was a nervous 18-year-old who fretted over every syllable that escaped her lips and seemed terrified of the publicity circuit. Today, Stewart and her costars exude considerably more confidence.

The last two Twilight movies have earned more than $1 billion worldwide and supercharged their careers. Stewart is about to shoot an adaption of a Jack Kerouac;s ‘On the Road’, Lautner’s embarking on John Singleton’s action thriller ‘Abduction’, and Pattinson’s starring alongside Reese Witherspoon as a veterinarian in a traveling circus in ‘Water for Elephants’. The actors make an extremely tight trio: honest, protective of each other, and warmly familial. In person, as on screen, Pattinson and Lautner’s mutual affection for Stewart is the tie that binds.

-How do you think Eclipse ranks against the other two films?

Taylor Lautner: It is definitely my favorite.

Robert Pattinson: I don’t like it as much. {Laughs} Could you imagine if I meant that?

Kristen Stewart: It’s always hard because you’re so close to it. I run this really intense list of, like, checks and balances to make sure everything has come across. But I know I pulled less of my hair out {watching} it.

“Eclipse” Cast Interview with The Telegraph (UK)

COPIED AND PASTE

Across the globe, armies of teenage girls – and more than a few of their middle-aged mothers – are gearing up for the movie event of the summer. Eclipse, the third film adaptation of author Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight saga, is not released for another fortnight yet, thanks to the franchise’s countless, indefatigable fans – the self-styled Twilighters and Twihards – the film has already racked up impressive advance ticket sales and its success is pretty much guaranteed.
Before it was transmuted into box office gold, Meyer’s tale, which recounts the romantic travails of Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart), a teenage girl who moves to a Pacific Northwest town populated by vampires and werewolves, captured the imagination of a generation of young female readers. They, like Bella, have given their hearts to a benign bloodsucker called Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson, or RPattz to his fans), a beautiful and surprisingly honourable hero.

Last year, Meyer’s series of four Twilight books sold copies to the value of more than £29 million in Britain alone, accounting for one tenth of the entire children’s market according to analysts Nielsen, while the first two chapters in the movie franchise, Twilight (2008) and New Moon (2009), have together taken more than £750 million at the international box office. Add in DVD and merchandising sales and that figure will more than double.

“I think the success of the Twilight movies, not just the books, comes down to Stephenie Meyer,” says Bryce Dallas Howard, who joins the cast of Eclipse as the vengeful vampire Victoria (replacing Rachel Lefevre, who played the character in the first film). The 29-year-old actress, daughter of Oscar-winning director Ron Howard, fell for the novels before being approached for the movie because she thought Meyer’s account of Bella’s romantic struggles felt authentic, even though the object of her affections is a vampire.

“You really see the world through Bella’s eyes,” says Howard, who initially turned down the role of Victoria in the first Twilight movie, because she felt the part was too small, “and you fall in love with Edward, and then get your heart broken, and fall in love with Jacob [Black, a werewolf played by Taylor Lautner], and then you’re in danger.

“It’s like you’re feeling these things yourself, and the way that she expresses Bella’s emotions just feels so honest and true. Stephenie Meyer has taken us on an extraordinary ride, and I think that they’ve captured that in the movies. The film-makers listen to what the fans are saying, and it’s a rare instance where you’re making a film for an audience that you know really well.”
