'New Moon' Sells 4 Million DVDs During its First Weekend

COPY AND PASTE

The latest DVD release in the Twilight saga, New Moon, has already bested its predecessor in selling 4 million copies in its first weekend alone. With the first film selling 3.8 million copies in its first weekend, New Moon already has a 200,000 copy lead in beating the first film's 9.2 million total sold during 2009, which made it the best-selling DVD that year.

Much of this success is due to Summit Entertainment's "New Moon at Midnight" events, which amounted to 7,000 different events at various retailers nationwide. Many of the film's cast and crew members made appearances at the various events to promote the film, including director Chris Weitz and Peter Facinelli.

Summit Entertainment co-chairmen Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger thanked fans of the saga in a joint statement for the company: "Once again the incredibly dedicated fans of 'The Twilight Saga' came out in massive numbers this weekend for the opportunity to be one of the first [to] take home the second movie in the series. As we have said all along, the fans are what make this franchise and we once again thank them for their support."

I'm sorry to say that I contributed to this number, as my youngest step sister is a huge fan of the books and the first film, and her birthday is coming up. Opted for the vanilla 2-disc set instead of the exclusive "Ultimate Fan Edition" Walmart was offering. Also saw a flock of girls at a local Blockbuster here in Tempe, AZ literally scream as they lined up to receive their free posters as they waited for midnight, despite the radio station playing the movie just outside the store on a large HDTV. It was astounding. Me? I was there picking up Watchmen on Blu-Ray with some gift cards. Honest!
